Reducing Injury Risk in Cold Weather, National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, Shoulder Y Raises

Reducing Injury Risk in Cold Weather

Cold weather reduces tissue flexibility and strength, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries among workers. Keep your risk down by starting your day with a dynamic warm-up indoors and wear insulated layers to help keep your muscles warm. Strains can result from slips and falls, so make sure to wear appropriate footwear and keep your eyes on the path. Hydration and regular breaks in heated areas also helps to maintain circulation.

National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

National Impaired Driving Prevention Month is observed in December, with the simple reminder that planning saves lives. Prevention begins with making wise decisions; designate a sober driver ahead of time, use a rideshare app, or call a friend for a ride home. Look out for your friends and family and speak up if someone shouldn’t be driving. Planning and looking out for one another can prevent devastating consequences during the holiday season.

Shoulder Y Raises

The Shoulder Y Raise is a beneficial exercise that strengthens the upper back and shoulder stabilizers, which support good posture. Perform this either with body weight only or start with a light-weight dumbbell in each hand.

  1. Stand with your arms at your sides.

  2. With your thumbs pointed upward, raise your arms at a 45-degree angle to shoulder height in the form of a Y.

  3. Perform 3 sets of 10.
