Be Aware of Slippery Surfaces, Proper Handwashing, Isometric Shoulder Exercises
Be Aware of Slippery Surfaces
Falls are the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death. Additionally, more than 8 million people are treated in emergency rooms for fall-related injuries each year. While not all falls are related to slips, being aware of slip hazards can reduce your risk of injury. To prevent slips, wear sturdy footwear with sufficient tread. Walk slowly and take small steps on surfaces known to be icy or wet. Clean up spills immediately and use salt on icy areas. Finally, always keep your eyes on the path ahead to maintain awareness of slippery surfaces.
Proper Handwashing
This holiday season, stay healthy and help minimize the spread of germs by washing your hands thoroughly.
Wet your hands with clean, running water.
Apply soap and lather your hands by rubbing them together. Be sure to get the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Sing the “Happy Birthday” song or the ABCs from beginning to end twice for an easy timer.
Rinse your hands thoroughly and dry them with a clean towel.
Isometric Shoulder Exercises
Strengthening the external rotators of your shoulders can help reduce your risk of shoulder injury. Try isometric external rotation for a low-impact but effective exercise: Stand with your elbows close to your body and bent at 90 degrees. Place a ball or towel between your hand and the wall and press your forearm and hand outward against the wall for 5-10 seconds, then relax and repeat 8-10 times. Maintain good posture and steady breathing without forcing or straining the shoulders.
