Sleeponomics, Magnesium, Romanian Deadlift (RDL)
Sleeponomics
One consequence of aging is that our joints begin to stiffen when we wake up. What can make this worse is the place we go to recharge: our mattress. As we age, our bodies need more structural support, so our once-comfortable, soft, fluffy mattress can become the silent cause of waking-hour discomfort. If this sounds familiar, try transitioning to a medium-firm mattress to increase spinal and pelvic support. You may wake up feeling like a million bucks!
Magnesium
The long shifts utility workers face can lead to significant musculoskeletal fatigue. Magnesium is a vital electrolyte that helps prevent severe muscle cramping, boosts cellular energy production, and speeds physical recovery after long shifts. Nearly 50% of Americans are deficient in this electrolyte. To maintain peak performance, aim for the recommended 400–420 mg daily. Pack magnesium-rich snacks like almonds or pumpkin seeds in your cooler to keep your muscles fueled, firing efficiently, and recovery optimized.
Romanian Deadlift (RDL)
Unlike the traditional deadlift, the RDL focuses on the lowering of the load, the part of the movement where the most strain occurs. Begin with the load at hip height, then, with your knees slightly bent (15°-20°) hinge at your hips with your chest out to lower the weight until your trunk is parallel to the floor. A lighter weight is often necessary to maintain proper trunk and core control.
