Leaf Raking Ergonomics

Raking leaves is a common fall chore. Take the time to review the ergonomic principles of this task .  A proper warm up prior to the activity gives the muscles a chance to prepare for the twisting and pulling raking requires.  Pay attention to the type and size of the rake and make sure is comfortable for your hands and height.  Using proper lifting techniques when lifting bags protects your lower back.  Lastly, wet leaves pose a slipping risk. Surveying your path, clearing the leaves prior to rainfall, and using 3 points of contact lessen your risks of slipping.  


Food Safety Awareness

September is food safety awareness month.  It is estimated that there are 48 million cases a year equating to about 1 out of 6 Americans a year.  Individuals who are most at risk are pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and the elderly.  Safe food handling practices can reduce your risk of getting sick.  Washing your hands and surfaces frequently, keeping raw foods separate from produce, using separate cutting boards, cooking foods to the proper temperature, and keeping foods chilled and outside the “danger zone” (between 40-140 degrees Fahrenheit) where bacteria can grow rapidly can help keep you safe from foodborne illness.  


Kettlebell Swings

Kettlebell swings are a great strength and cardiovascular exercise that only requires adequate space and a kettlebell. Starting with your feet slightly wider than hip width apart with the kettlebell in front of you.  Pushing your bottom back. Driving through your heels, using your hip and glute muscles drive the weight upward stopping at about chest height keeping your arms straight.  The kettlebell should be moved with the momentum of the hip hinge, not your arms. Using a lightweight kettlebell to start increasing as you are more confident in your form.
