Reducing Elbow Torque
One of the most common areas of discomfort in construction workers is the elbow. One reason for this is the high amounts of torque created at the elbow when working with tools. At 90 degrees of elbow flexion, the biceps muscle group creates the most torque on the elbow joint, creating opportunities to develop muscle discomfort. Since this is a frequent working position, a great mitigation technique would be to look for mechanical means to reduce this stressor.
Vitamin K
Vitamin K is essential for workers experiencing joint pain and those who endure chronic bone stress. Vitamin K works with calcium to strengthen bones by improving calcium absorption. Through this process, it helps to reduce the risk of fractures, a common concern in physically demanding jobs. Vitamin K also supports cardiovascular health by preventing arterial calcification while helping to maintain proper blood clotting. For those with high physical strain, supplementing vitamin K, especially K2, can support long-term bone, joint, and cardiovascular health.
Elbow Self Mobilization
If elbow discomfort troubles you, one method of reducing that discomfort is with a self-mobilization. To perform this, find a doorway and lean against it with the door frame against your upper arm. With the upper arm stabilized by the door, apply a lateral (away from midline) pressure by pushing on the inside of your elbow while also bending the elbow. Perform this 10x. If the pressure hurts, try using a small piece of foam padding between your hand and the elbow.
