Digging and Shoveling, National Cancer Prevention Month, Rotator Cuff Strengthening

Digging and Shoveling

The shoulder is a shallow ball-and-socket joint that relies on the rotator cuff for stability. Maintaining rotator cuff strength can help reduce symptoms of tendinitis. To perform this exercise, all you need is a light (yellow or red) resistance band.  Stand tall with your head and shoulders back. Keep your elbow pulled into your side and bent at 90 degrees. Slowly rotate your arm outward for 3 sets of 10 repetitions, then repeat the exercise by bringing the arm across your body for 3 sets of 10 repetitions.

National Cancer Prevention Month

While we cannot control our genetics, there are things we can do to help decrease our risk of cancer. February is National Cancer Prevention Month, and studies show that nearly 40% of cancer cases are related to preventable lifestyle choices. Take these steps to help reduce your risk:

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Exercise regularly

  • Quit smoking and other forms of tobacco.

  • Protect your skin from the sun.

  • Get vaccinated for pathogens that cause certain cancers.
